The popular meaning of comedy is any discourse that is intended to amuse. Most comedy contains a combination of one or more of the elements of surprise, conflict, repetitiveness, incongruity and the opposite to the expected happening.
There are many differing forms of comedy some more popular in today’s culture than others. Stand-up comedy has gained huge popularity over the last couple of decades with many comedy clubs opening to supply the public demand. A stand-up comedian will speak directly to an audience with funny stories and one-liners. The medium of television has opened the world of comic movies to the masses and has differing sub-genres such as comedy of manners, fish out of water comedy, parody or spoof, anarchic, black comedy, gross out comedy and romantic. Sketch comedy is also a popular form which involves a group of comedians in a short act between one and ten minutes long either humourous throughout or with a comedy conclusion. Improvisational comedy uses the audience to guide the comic through interactions with fast humourous retort. Other forms include buffoon comedy, comic novel, musical comedy, dramedy, tragicomedy and television and radio comedy.
