Jokes & Comedy

whos line is it anyway? There are many differing forms of comedy based on the subject and situation that the comedy is situated on. Black or Dark comedy usually approaches a disturbing subject matter such as death, drugs, rape and terrorism. Comedians famous for their proficiency in this area are Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor and Dennis Leary to name a few. Blue comedy is based around sex but also sexism, racism and homophobia. This form of comedy is usually strictly an adult form of entertainment as the language used is very graphic. Character comedy is based around an individual and the humour to be found in that individual’s life and personality, usually this is based on standard stereotypes of society. Improvisational comedy, shortened to just ‘improv’, is a fast moving and mostly unplanned comedy routine. Sometimes this involves two or more comedians such as the TV show ‘Whose line is it anyway?’ or it can involve the comedian interacting with the audience.

Observational comedy looks at everyday life and usually points out the silliness of situations we encounter all the time in our day to day lives. Alternative comedy differs typically in the standard formation of punch lines and often weaves other genres within its routine. Physical comedy is most typified by clowns but taken to a higher level by comedians. It is in physical comedy that we laugh more at the characters facial or body movements or the situations they deal with, one current favorite is the now classic Mr. Bean who very rarely speaks at all! Other comedy genres include Prop comedy, surreal comedy, deadpan, satire, wit and word play and mockumentary.
With such a diverse and unlimited pool of resources for comedians to dip into it is likely that they will keep us laughing for a long time to come!
