Jokes & Comedy

cartoon comedyJokes can be catagorised into many differing topics relating to their content and punch line, and generally every subject can be turned into some form of joke.

Some topics can be offensive such as ethnic jokes which poke fun at different races and cultures and are becoming increasingly unacceptable. Perhaps one exception to this rule is where the comedian is actually ridiculing his own race or culture which seems to make it more acceptable. Some might say that in this case it is actually what is known as self-depreciating comedy as that also targets the comedian himself as an individual, Woody Allen is well renowned for this form of comedy and incorporating it with mocking Jewish traditions and behaviors.

Political jokes are favoured for their light hearted and often sarcastic look at the government, policies and the politicians themselves. Dirty jokes are common and usually feature a sexual reference within the content whereas Sick jokes often cross lines of taste by featuring disability or such other considered taboo subjects. Other groups include Surrealist, Anti-jokes (where the intention is not to be funny which inherently in itself is funny), Mathematical jokes and Professional humour. New forms of jokes are arising such as the quite abstract humour of comedy shows such as ‘The Mighty Boosh’ and further back in British comedy ‘Monty Pythons Flying Circus’ would also be very abstract and has developed quite a cult following.
